Explaining away Morgellons Symptoms Why is Morgellons so hard to believe?

Symptoms of the condition known as Morgellons are very broad and encompass a range of illnesses, both mental and physical.  Because the disease is fairly unknown, it is difficult to pinpoint an exact checklist of symptoms by which it can be diagnosed.  For this reason, it is not uncommon for many people, in the medical profession and private sector to voice their disbelief of the legitimacy of this condition.  In this age of modern medicine and discovery, why is it so hard to believe that the illness is real?

The first symptom often reported by sufferers of Morgellons has to do with lesions on the surface of the skin.   These sores, large and small may or may not be present in all complainants.  They have been noted as being part of the disease, but also a result of the scratching caused by the sensation of something crawling under the skin.   The lesions can take several different forms, such as acne-looking blemishes or open wounds containing pus.

Because these skin abnormalities attributed to Morgellons are so very broad in spectrum, many physicians have written them off to be linked to any number of other conditions.  Certain parasitic infections are known to cause the open sores that some complain of.  In others, the pimple-like areas may be just that, and there are a number of other explanations for the skin lesions that have been labeled as part of Morgellons.

A distinctive symptom of those who claim to have Morgellons is the crawling sensations felt all over the body.  To many, it is as if worms or bugs have begun to move around below the skin.  This condition can make it difficult to function and cause excessive itchiness and scratching.  Equally disturbing is the sensation of the bugs biting or stinging the skin as well.  This is one of the most predominant symptoms that has lead many healthcare professionals to believe that Morgellons is a psychological disease.

Other than recognizing Morgellons as a disease, there is another explanation for the sensation of bugs crawling under the skin.  Delusions of parasitosis is diagnosed by the belief that you are infested with worms or insects.  Sufferers of DP may seem outwardly fine, showing no obvious mental impairment.  However, it has been associated with schizophrenia, obsession, bipolar disorder, depression, and anxiety disorders.  Based on this, many doctors have dismissed this symptom of Morgellons as a mental disorder like DP and refused to treat those patients as if they had a medical condition.

One very common symptom that is associated with Morgellons and just about every other disease known to man is excessive fatigue.  Fatigue is almost always present in the list of symptoms presented by Morgellons sufferers.  For most, however, it is no stretch to write the chronic fatigue off to any number of other mental, physical and environmental factors.  It is nearly impossible to see this as a telltale sign of Morgellons because it is so common with many illnesses.

Other symptoms linked to Morgellons have to do with changes in behavior and vision.  Joint pain and digestive or gastrointestinal problems have also been reported.  Because Morgellons has little research behind it, these symptoms can be attributed to a mere coincidence.  There is such a small number of reported sufferers when compared to the number of people in population that these common health complaints cannot be exclusively attributed to Morgellons.

There is one symptom of the mysterious Morgellons disease that remains somewhat unexplained.  Many sufferers will report fibers coming from their skin.  Comparisons have been done on subjects that do not know each other and live states apart that supply fibers that are chemically and biologically almost identical.  This has been a difficult symptom for naysayers to explain away, though many continue to try.

The knowledge of Morgellons is growing with increasing momentum, and sufferers are no longer doing so in silent.  There are websites and research foundations associated with attempting to find the cause and cure of this debilitating condition.  Though there are several reasons to discount Morgellons as a catch-all for a number of conditions, thousands continue to suffer while the medical world continues to debate.
