History Morgellons
What Is The CDC Doing To Identify The Cause Of Morgellons Disease? -The Centers for Disease Control is responsible for, among other things, controlling and preventing the spread of infectious disease. Because of the mystery surrounding Morgellons disease, people have been waiting for the Centers for Disease Control to step in and investigate. This has not happened in a timely manner. This may be partly due to the fact that many physicians are quick to diagnose patients as suffering from delusions of parasitosis. Often this diagnosis is based on one symptom of Morgellons, which is the sensation of bugs crawling on the skin. If the CDC suspects that they are dealing with delusional people, it is understandable that they may be slow to react.
The Morgellons Research Foundation -The Morgellons Research Foundation began in 2004 as a way to raise public awareness about an obscure disease that causes painful, itchy sores and eventually leads to neurological impairment. The name “Morgellons” comes from a condition described by Sir Thomas Browne documented in France in the 17th century in which black hairs emerged from children with sores on their bodies. It is not known whether this disease is the same, but the condition needed a name, so founder Mary Leitao provided the label.
Mary Leitao - Mother and Activist for Morgellons Awareness -Mary Leitao has sick children. In 2001, her two year old son, Andrew, began complaining of “bugs” crawling on him. He had sores under his lip that would not heal. Leitao, a biologist who was now a stay-at-home mom, took him to a number of doctors. They prescribed medication for a number of skin disorders, including scabies.
